MAN ON FIRE
PECULIAR HAPPENING BOTTLE OF VARNISH EXPLODES EXCITING EPISODE FIRE BRIGADE CALLED (Per Press Association) Wellington, Sept. 2.9 Air. Frederick Howard, of King’s Crescent, Lower Hutt, was badly burnt about the face and body last evening. A bottle of varnish had bene placed on a mant.lepiece well away from the lire. Air. Howard and his yife were sitting in front of the stove when the bottle cracked and its spilled contents made contact with the stove. Airs. Howard had heard the crack and managed to escape, but her husband was enveloped in Dames, his clothes, being saturated with the varnish, blazing fiercely. In an endeavour to prevent the spread of the fire he rushed outside, but this only made matters worse for himself. Miss Howard and a young man. however, saved him. Airs. Howard ran out to alarm the fire brigade and Just managed to do so before fainting at the alarm box, where she was found by the brigade when they dashed up. Meanwhile, tin* fire had been put out. A doctor was called and sent Air. Howard to the hospital.
