NEW BUILDING FOR LONDON
TO COST TWO MILLIONS (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) Rugby, .Sep to 111 ner 26 It is anticipated that the Government will shortly sanction the preparation of plans for the construction on the Embankment side of Whitehall of a new block of Government offices, costing aproximately L‘2 millions. The Act authorising the- erection ol these buildings was passed 21 year's ago, hut the scheme was postponed owing to the war and the need for economy.
At present staffs of some of tlie departments in Westminster are working in buildings oil which the Government is paying rent, while the accommodation in some is considered inadequate and unsuitable.
The. Office of Works lias already asked the Royal Institute of British Architects to nominate fe n architects whose names will be submitted to the fina) selection. It is stipulated that the architects nominated shall not be over 55 years old.
The scheme, if proceeded with, will take some years to complete.
