Mr W. P. Smith, postmaster at Waipukurau for the past 3J years, has been appointed chief postmaster at Westport. The death of Mr George Flux, headmaster of the Wellington South School for 20 years, took place at Te Kuiti yesterday. Jlr Winston Churchill continues to make satisfactory progress, but owing- to the severity of his recent haemorrhage, some time must elapse before he ran engage in active work. Owing- to the death of Mr Bond, io was necessary to appoint a new chairman of directors for the Bainesse Dairy Co. The vacancy has been filled by Mr F. hep. Robin, who hag been dairying- at Bainesse for the past 20 years. The dealh is reported by cable from Sydney of Dr. Christopher Brennan, Professor of Comparative Literature, aged 62. lie was a distinguished poet, one of ihe Bulletin’s group, and during the war published “The Chant of Doom.” There died at the Home of Compassion at Island Bay yesterday Sister May Carmel Gallagher, age 72 tears. She was one of the late -Mother Mary Joseph Aubert’s original companions in charitable work 'at Jerusalem, on the Wanganui .liver.
