The Feilding Star Oreau and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette MONDAY. OCTOBER, 3, 1932. EXTRAVAGANT ERA?
A first impression of the perusal of the report of the national Expenditure Royal Commission is that New Zealanders ai'e passing through what w e might he tempted to, call the Era ui Extravagance. But, a second thought lead 9 t° a consideration of cause and effect - Th e Great War conducted along lines that had no regard for the expense of the needed article, fj*oni i’crxl fol munitions. John, Bull and Sons won the war, but not until the firm and it s allies had run up an awful bill of oxpenses, in the running up of which and people alike had got the habit of spending without counting the cost Habit dfe 9 hard, and the report of the Economy Commission brings New Zealand up with a sharp turn to make Us realise yet. again the penalty we arc still paying for interfering ;in another nation’s trouble, for a war which was none of our seeking, for tho war lust of Germany— a lust that still has Fritz in its grip. It is not so much tliaf New Zealanders have been living beyond their mean£ a 9 that their Dominion is extravagantly over-governed by politicians and heads of State departments.
