The unusual action of a remanded fcnan calling at the police station and asking that he be brought before the Court immediately was described when Herbert Scott, 32, a tablet porter, was charged with stealing a hand-saw and obtaining sums totalling £3 by false pretences. Accused’s counsel said that .against his advice accused was pleading guilty to all the charges, saying he had no hope and it was a case of his word against another’s, lie (counsel) thought accused stole the saw, but he was not guilty of the other charges. A detective said Scott told the police that if left out on bail he would go away on the Aorangi to America. The Magistrate granted six months* probation and ordered restitution.
