HITS CANADA HARD AN EDITORIAL COMMENT (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) (Received Aug'. 2b, 1.30 p.m.) Vancouver, Aug*. 25. Commenting’ on New Zealand’s motor car tariff the Vancouver Sun states editorially : The first sheaves in Canada’s election harvest were garnered in last week when New Zealand peremptorially cut off the tariff preference which she had maintained on Canadian motor cars anti parts, and she also discussed the dropping of further preference on British Columbia lumber and newsprint. This means that Canada’s yearly trade amounting to 12 million dollars with New Zealand in motor cars and motor parts will be materially decreased and that any hope of expanding British Columbia’s market for her wood products in New Zealand might just —s well be forgotten. Canadian people are paying a high price for the whimsical notion of electing Mr Bennett to the Premiership of Canada. New Zealand’s slap at Canadian trade should give Canadians something to think about. It is most certain to injure Canadian trade to the extent of creating many more hungry mouths in our Dominion next winter. And Mr Bennett was to end rather than increase, unemployment.”
