DECLINE IN ATTENDANCE GENERAL SYNOD RETURNS (Per Press Association) Wellingtoo, April 25. The .sessional committee of (lie General Synod reported that ordinations were 8(> compared with 57 in the previous year Despite this the number of clergy had decreased. Baptisms decreased from OGS2 in 1028-24 to 8281) in ID2G-27, and continuations had increased by over 400. Sunday school scholars’ returns show a decrease of 1200 compared with 1022-24 despite the increase in teachers. MISSION WORK AMONG MAORIS. , By far the greatest cost of the work amongst (lie Maoris in JO2O-27 was borne by the North Island Church Dioceses, which gait: £542 for tills mission, and the Nelso Diocese, which gave £O2. Nothing was received from .South Island Dioceses. It was recommended that the different dioceses be urged to use all efforts to provide a minimum stipend of £250 with house and necessary travelling expenses for all vicars whether of parishes or parochial districts. BISHOP WITHOUT A DIOCESE The appointment of a Maori Assistant Bishop to work among those of his own race in ihe diocese of such Bishops as were willing to accept him in that capacity is recommended by the Select Committee set bp by the General Synod to bring down a report in regard to the Maori Bishopric.
