LYTTON STREET SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The above committee met last night. Messrs Jas. Penny (chairman), J. W. and W. Bramwell, junr., W. Crook, W. G. Hicks, A. J. Gibsone, W. Kilford and H. R. Jenkins were present, and an apology for non-attendance was read from Mr S. Christmas.

The Education Board notified the temporary appointment of Miss O. M. Ray as an additional assistant on the school staff.

The visiting committee reported that the rose garden which MrLange has well under way promises to greatly improve the appearance ol the school grounds. The chairman reported a successful celebration of Arbor Day, and that Mr Pirani, who was present, expressed the hope that before the hot summer weather starts increased class room accommodation will be provided for the pupils o fthe school. It was stated by the chairman that reports were current regarding an alleged unfair advantage given to the pupils of a certain school in the prize essay competition promoted by the Patriotic Society, and the matter was I left in his hands for further inquiry. Arrangements were made for having the school scrubbed out with disinfectant during the term holidays. The headmaster reported 320 pupils on the school roll, but owing to wet weather and an epidemic of severe colds the average attendance for the month had fallen to 283. The number on tho for the past month was: Number on the school roll, 320; highest attendance for past month 301; average attendance past month. 283. I havo received notice from the Board that owing to the increased attendance Miss Ray has l>een appointee! fifth assistant. The term examination held last week disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs throughout the school.
