SLOW DEATH IN OPEN BOATS

TORTURES OF U-BOAT VICTIMS

Copenhagen, May 4. A survivor described tho seizure of tJ;e Norwegian steamer C'arnitta laden w.ith corn for the Belgian Relief Committee. When she was stopped in the North Sea the submarine comn ander refused to-recognise the German safe conduct and ordered 23 of tiic crew into two small boats. They v.ere not allowed supplies. A prize , crew took the Carnitta to Germany. Five of the -occupants of one of the Gamitta's boats died. Two corpses remained in the boat, the stirvivors being too weak to throw them overboard. All suffered terribly during six days of buffeting at eea and two subsequently died. It was necessary to amputate both legs of the remainder owing to gangrene. Four occupants of the other boat died of starvation and some fell out and were tliowned. The few survivors were half dead at the bottom of tho boat w 1 en picked up.
