INTERESTING WAR NOTES.
Loudon Times—Sydney Sun Services
(Received Nov. 7, 8 a.m.) London, November 8. An' interesting chart has been prepared at Whitehall, illustrative of the recruiting. It shows the call to arms received tho best response at. the time when the disaster was at its highest point. It reached the black mark during the first week in September, when the Allies wero retreating and the Germans nearly at the gates of Paris. The indicator rose high towards tlio end of September ,when three cruisers were sunk, and shot up again after the fall of Antwerp. Tt is a fchnlhng experience to follow the fluctuations of the chart, and nothing could more finely show the spirit animating the people. The immediate effect of sombre news from the front was ii* impetus to recruiting. Ascertaining that a- German force occupied the forest of Pirrov, two French cavalry regiments, carrying mitrailleuses on horsebacg, fruitlessly sought them throughout a whole night. Suddenly in the morning they stumbled upon the enemy's outpost who surrendered, saying they were tired of hardships and long luarclips, and would gladly surrender, if only to save their faces. Later the main body of the I rench camo into contact with the enemy. Th o Germans started faring in the air, and the French, tailing to grasp tho meaning of this manoeuvre, charged with drawn ■sabres in face of a fierce fire pressing the charge home. They killed 400 Germans, while 350 surrendered. The rest fled in confusion. Rome, November 8. A priest- named Argentiere gave a wireless demonstration nt the British Embassy.- lie plaoed the apparatus in a corner of tho room and received a message from London. Later, by meana of hi s invention, which renders the pole unnecessary, he intercepted a message from the German headquarters staff.
* mt. Constantinople, November 8. Tho Goeben and her consorts have arrived, having escaped from an encounter with a Russian warship, Washington, November 8.
