Joseph Stoddart* and Frederick Catling were arrested for a conspiracy to obtain money by offering prizes in certain 'circulars called The Football Record and Football Sport. Evidence showed ifchat Stoddart netted nearly £200,000. He was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. Caifling was found not guilty of false pretences, amd in regard to his share in the conspiracy the jury disagreed, and Catling was released on his own recognisances.
