Notes and Commsnts.

A proposal has been before the Manawatu County Council for some time lo extend the tram line to Bulls. .At yesterday's meeting of the Council the i chairiuaii (Cr. J. 6. Wilson) said the ratepayers in his riding were not willing to contribute, to the cost of the . extension, and he wished it to be understood that he would not undertake I anything in connection with the ox- ■ tension except on that understanding. I Cr. MeKenzie, who is a keen supporI ter of the proposed extension, urged I the furtherance of the matter, and I | persuaded the Council to meet the I j representatives of other public bodies I ; interested. Whilst the discussion wa« I j in progress a telephone message w:>s « ! received from Foxton stating that I j the Mayor and Cr. Hennessey had I been appointed to represent the FoxI ton Borough Council. It was decided I to ask the Tramway Manager to arrange for a conference with other representatives, and to call a special ! meeting of the Council to meet the ■ delegates. When is the Council going j to begin the study of the propose 1 • ' that the tramway should bo extended to Feilding? ! • In an editorial article published in j the Star on January 25 on f A Naj tional Park for Feilding," we drew : attention to the splendid bit of native bush near the town known as Giesen's or Bailey's Bush, and .advocating that J it should be reserved for all time for the public good. The matter has, we : are pleased to note, received very ' prompt attention from the member for l the. district (Mr D. H. Guthrie). ! During a visit to Wellington Mr Guthj rie brought the Stak's suggestion uni tier the notice of the Scenic Depart--1 inent. As a result, a member of the department is accompanying Mr Guth- | rie to Feilding to-day, for the purpose of making an inspection of the bush, : which, as we pointed out before, is not only a picturesque spot, some sixty ; acres in extent, but it contains fine specimens of almost every kind of timber native to New Zealand. Mr Guthrie and the department are to i be commended for their promptness in •' making an early inspection of an ideal spot that we hope will be secured as a national park for this district.
