SCHOOL FUNCTIONS.

RONGOTEA. The annual distribution of P«aes took place at tiie Kongotea School on Urulay attoiuoon, iv die presence of a number of parents,, previous to the breaking up at the school far tne Unristanas holidays. Tiie prizes we presented by Mr J. Penney,, Chairman i>i me School Committee. Addresses were given by Mr J. Penney, Mr Broadbelt, and Mr Bowater, the latter strongjly impressing on th« minds of the children the necessity of regular attendance at school and doing their best. Mrs Beattie also spoke. At the close of the prize distribution, Mr Bowater, the headmaster, announced the closing of the school for six weeks. Hearty cheers were given for Mr Penney, the teachers, and the ladies present. GLEN OROUA. A very enjoyable concert was given in the Glen Oroua Hall on Friday night by the children of the Glen Oroua School, previous to the closing of the school for the Christmas holidays, and although it was a wet night, the hall was crowded to its utmost capacity. The items given were as follows: Duet, Misses Sanson and Richmond; chorus, small girls; recitation, Maggie Mudford; part song, upper girls;, chorus, small boys and girls ; dialogue, '' Giving Evidence;" scarf drill, small girls; solo, Dorothy Richmond; oho-■r-us, girls; recitation, Eric Bierre; dhous, small boys and girls; dialogue, "An Afternoon Call;" song, "Climb Up," specially worthy of notice; pianoforte duet, Misses Farmer; chorus, small girls ; solo Jeannie Ross ; recitation, Reggie Boyce; chorus, all girls; recitation, Walter Boswell; garland drill and song, upper girls ; dialogue. Catching the Truant; solo Kathleen- Sanson; recitation, Laura Farmer; chorus, small girls; dialogue, Photography in New York, which caused much amusement; maypole. The children performed their respective parts very well indeed, and great credit is due to their teachers, Miss Brooke and Mr Gibbs; also to Miss Sanson, vifoo acted as accompanist. During the interval, Mr John Sanson, Chairman of, the School Committee, said he thought he could not make better use of the interval than to present the medals which had been won by 17 of the pupills of the school for attendance in not missing a single half day for two, three, and five years respectively, and fie thought that was a splendid record lor a country school where miles had to be traversed by children to reach the school. Mr Sanson then proceeded to call the names of the successful children and ■as each child came up, Mrs Sanson pinned a silver medal on their breast, of which they were al justly proud. Tb/* following are the names of the meixl winners:— James Clark, Lizzie Clark. Alice Clark, Laura Farmer, Ida .Farmer, Annie Farmer, Nellie Farmer,- Kathleen Sanson, Dorothy Knnvon. .Arthur S^nwMi. Willip Younir. Nellie Young, Gilmore BosweOl, lan Amon, Thomas Scott, Alice Scott, Doris Rucroft. This little ceremony over, Mr Gibbs, the head teacher, said he thought it was a great kindness on Mrs Sanson's part to provide these silver medals year after year. He was always putting his hand into his pocket and it never came out empty, and he thought they should recognise this goodness in some way. He asked Mr Sanson to accept from the scholars of the Glen Oroua school a handsome ealau bowl of oak and silver. Mr Sanson, who was taken entirely by surprise, suitably thanked Mr Gibbs and the scholars of the school for their kin3ness, and said he hopped that he and Mrs Sanson would enjoy many a bowl of salad out of that bowl, which he shouHd treasure very much. At the close of the concert, dancing was indulged in. and all thoroughly enjoyed temselves.
