The Ascot Gold Cup, valued at 500 guineas, while being exhibited behind a grandstand in charge of the maker's representative and a constable, was stolen while their attention was momentarily diverted, presumably by the thief's accomplice. The cup was to bo run for to-morrow. STATE INSURANCE. The committee, under the chairmanship of Lord Farrer, which was appointed to inquire t into the practicability and desirability of the Post Office providing, in connection with the Savings Bank, for the insurance of employers against liabilities under the Workmen's Compensation Act, teports that it is undesirable that the State should embark on insurance schemes. The committee deprecates haste in tbo matter. FRENCH INTERNAL TROUBLES. Paris, June 19. There are indications that committees of the disaffected departments sought to establish a confederation, with M. Albert as President, hoping to obtain an auto-Constitu-tion. Trainloads of troops moved about, changing garrisons yesterday, removing to a distance troops which had been recruited from among the southern population. Extraordinary scenes are being witnessed at Marbonne. Late last night the tocsin sounded in the Town Hall, and people poured into the street and began to erect barricades. M. Ferroul, ex-Mayor, whose arrest was ordered, stopped them, saying: "We want no barricades. I surrender rrvself to justice. We trant no bloodshed." He then gammoned them to destroy the barricades, and himself set example. The people obeyed, and the barricades were ra moved. Troops occupy Marbonne. M. Ferroul was arrested without disturbance. Detectives, with a military escort, went to Argellreas to arrest M. Albert and five others. They arrested three, but failed to find Albert. A MAGISTRATE JN TROUBLE. London, June 19. In the House of Commons, Mr Birrell, in reply to a question, announced that ho intended to prosecute Mr Kelly, the Irish Magistrate, in connection with the speech cabled on 14th inst. CRICKET. London, June 19. Middlesex beat Kent by ten wickets. Mignon took 12 wickets for 90, and Trott six for 26. TENNIS. London, June 19. Oxford University drew with tho \ Australians in the tennis match. Wilding and Brookes won two matches, and Donst and Roberts lost two. SUEZ CANAL. London, June 19. In the House of Commons, in reply to Mr Vincent, Mr Asquitli said the Government had not considered the desirability of offering Suez Canal shares to the Governments of Australia and New Zealand, India and Natal at the market rate in proportion to their interest in the Canal. He did not think the suggestion practicable. COLOSSAL DIVIDEND.
