TELbdRAMb. o [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Christchurch, June 19. The four-year-old son of Mrs Burn, a visiter from Invercargill, was seriously injured in the D.I.C. lift this afternoon. The child had been riding up and down on the lift, and was being taken out, when he fell, and was caught between the lift and the floor. The little fellow was taken to the hospital, and is in a critical condition. Two prisoners at Lyttelton gaol, named R. McCarthy and A. Rawson, made a daring but unsuccessful attempt to escape this afternoon. With the aid of a long rope which they had manufactured out of bits of calico, they dropped over the high outer wall of the gaol and made off along an adjoining thoroughfare. The warder on the watch-tower saw the men escaping, but he did not fire for fear of hitting the children in v school playground below. The gaoler and a warder pursued the fugitives., and captured them in a private yard not far from the gao). McCarthy has escaped twice before, and has been declared an habitual criminal. Rawson, who came from Australia in 1902, is at present serving a sentence of five years for burglary. Wellington, June 19. At an inquest concerning the death of David Sutherland, aged 50, a deaf mute, whose body was taken from the harbour yesterday, a verdict of '.'Found Drowned," was returned. Napier, June 19. The Arbitration Court concludes its hearing of the neswpaper cases to-morrow, resuming them at Masterton on Tuesday next at noon, and returning to Wellington on following Wednesday afternoon. ' Auckland, June 19. Dr. Dalziell, who for a number of years has practised at Pnkekohe, 31 miles from Auckland, was arrested here to-day and charged with performing on illegal operation. It is reported that the patient concerned is out of danger, and will appear before the Police Court in the morning. Dunedin, June 19. The Master Bakers' Association has decided to reduce the price of bread to 6i cash for the 41b loaf. The reduction is to take effect on and after June 24, and is due to the decline in the price of flour. Masterton, June 19. At a meeting at Masterton of Parker's Land Settlement League tonight, it was resolved to enter a protest against the action of the flourmillers in raising the price of flour, and that the Government be urged to reduce the duty on the imported article. Dunedin, June 19. A prominent member of the legal profession resident in Dunedin, when seen in regard to the Attorney-Gen-eral's proposal which might mean the abolition of district courts and provision for a more continuous Court of Appeal, said he took it that Dr. Findlay's idea was probably to make Wellington the headquarters of judges, who would reside there. One judge, say, would go on circuit in the North Island and another on circuit in the South _ Island, following very much on the line of custom prevailing in England. The other judges would remain in Wellington, and could take court work there, and also the Court of Appeal. If this was the intention of the Attor-ney-General, it would mean that many of the colony's leading advocates would have to reside in Wellington, and follow the judges on circuit. Wellington, June 19. An inquiry was held to-day concerning the stranding of the steamer Huia on Long Point, Kapiti Island, while on a trip from Wanganui to Wellington. The Court found that Captain < Dowell did not take sufficient precautionary measures to ascertain his position when approaching Kapiti. The Court took into consideration his excellent record during the thirty years he had held a master's certificate, but thought that he should be censured for his want of care on this occasion, and be ordered to pay the costs of the inquiry. * Hastings, June 19. Before the Ikaroa Land Board, this morning, Mr C. B. Morrison, on behalf of Miss Meinertzhagen, who applied for a lease of a large area at Waimarama, contended that the leases were contracts, and that the Board has power, provisionally, to approve of contracts without the necessary declaration having been previously filed.
