WRECK OF THE STEAMER GAIRLOCH.
. ♦ Telegraph, Press Association Copyright Auckland. January 6. The Northern Steamship Co. does not insure its vessels, so that the loss of the Gairloch to them is a total one amounting to about £12,---000, but she could not be replaced by so serviceable a vessel for that sum. This is the first vessel the Company has lost through being wrecked. Other accidents have happened, but there have been no total losses. I /The Company can also boast that not a single life has been lost through accidents to their vessels. Mr Chas. Ranson, manager of the Northern Steamship Company, left for New Plymouth to-day, and thence will go to the scene of the wreck to see what can be done in the way of salvage. Nbw Plymouth, This Day. A preliminary enquiry into the wreck of the Gairlock is being held to-day by the Collector of Customs. It is not open to the press. The Harbor Board's dredge yesterday salvaged the ship's stores and furnishings, and if the weather •Gtetinues fine it should be possible to save a great deal of her cargo. There is no chance of getting her off. The Harbor Board declined to allow the .dredge to proceed to the wreck to-day.
