THE OUTBREAK OF ANTHRAX.

Telegraph Press Association Copyright Invebcakgill, January 6. , The outbreak of anthrax at Woodt lands was traced practically beyond doubt to Calcutta bones imported by the steamer Aparima, which arrived at 1 the Bloif at the end of September. It '< iB not considered advisable to disclose > the name of the firm that supplied this i particular parcel of manure. As the > whole cargo did not come from the [ same shippers, it is possible that only a part of it is ißfected with anthrax, ' and that there may not be another outbreak : but it is also possible that a ' large portion of the shipment was . gathered on the same p am, and tha , infected manure has been widely dis* ' tributed in Southland. ; This Day. ( Two more cows have died at Woodlands from anthrax. The out- \ break has been traced to bone which , were brought to the Bluff from India , by the Aparima, and the cause and , effect have been more clearly d^emon*. , strated than in any previous outbreak , m the colony. The hags containing the bones were placed in a line in : the paddock where the cattle were , gracing, and some spilt on the grass. , The bones may have been licked up, , or taken direct from the bags. A . sample of the bones has been for- , warded to Mr Gilruth to d^eijmine ' the presence of a^ba** baecilus! ' A [ portion 94 the consignment; was . steapaed in India and the. balance here, but not thoroughly. A steril- ■ isjng plant on modern principles is needed at the chief ports of the colony.
