Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright Gisborne, January 5. In tbe Eastern Maori election, the final count sbows Wi Pare, 2181 ; Pirini Mataiawhaia, 1568; Mohi Te Atohiahoia 1515. The Hon J. Carroll i* likely to proceed to Wellington by Sunday's steamer. The Gisborne police records show a large decrease in crime. Wanganui, January 5. At a public meeting to-night, Mr J. F. Mcßeth. who has been chief postmaster bere fur the past 25 years, and has been promoted to the posi ion of chief postmaster at Christchurch. was presented with an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns. Wellington, This Day. The old Trentham Hotel was destroyed by fire on Sunday night. The new building had just been completed near by, and the removal was about to take place. Both were owned by Mr F. McGovern, and Mr G. J. Walsh was the licensee. Insurances on the furniture and stock, £200 ; on the building, not known. The cause of the fire is unknown.
