THE MAKOHINE VIADUCT.
« A Test of the Structure. Telegraph. Press Association Copyright Maxgawkka, June 9. Despite the fact that it was not an official opening, fully 400 people witnessed the first engine crossing the great Makohine viaduct this afternoon. Shortly after 1 o'clock, an engine, drawing 12 trucks of ballast, was drawn up at the Ohingaiti side of the viaduct. On the trucks were fully sixty workman and in addition there was an empty truck, filled with public works officials, newspaper reporters, and some 20 ladies. At a given signal by the engineer, Mr Fraser, the preliminary trials took place, and the structure was severely tested with a dead weight of 150 tons. This heavy load passed and re-passed half a dozen times. Those in charge of this massive structure were thoroughly satisfied with the result, and after examination found everything solid and secure notwithstanding the great height of 242 feet and 700 feet across. The engineers, Messrs Cook, Frasei 1 and Snadden, each came >in for a great ovation, the crowd waving and cheering on the train's arrival at the Wellington side.
