An unfortunate man named Henry Watson, a labourer, aged 52 years, attempted suicide in Wellington last Saturday by eating a quantity of matches. Tho last work he had was at the end of April, and he nrrived in Wellington from the Wairarapa the previous Monday in a destitute condition. Since his arrival he had been sleeping in the Basin Reserve, he had had nothing to eat since 8 o'clock on Thursday morning, and he had been driven by starvation to make the attempt on his life, Watson was taken to the hospital, and is likely to recover. At the meeting of the Rangitikei County Council on Saturday last the report of their engineer on the stato of the Bulls Bridge was read, and also that of the Mauawatu County Engineer. The former's report said it would cost .£'7oo to repair and the patching would only last for three or four years, while the latter estimated the cost of repairs at £1 50, and though an expenditure of .£-100 would put the bridge right for 10 or 15 | >ears. We refer to Mrs Stubbington, wife of Mr R. Stubbiugton, senr,, of Makino road, wlio died last eveuiug ot the age of 58 years, after an illness of about nine mouths. Mrs Stubbington arrived in New Zealand with her husband aud family in 1574. iv the emigrant ship " Carnatic," and with them took up her residence iv this district. The funeral will leave her late residence on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock for the Feildiug cemetery. Wo regret to announce that another old Feilding identity in the person of Mr Henry McA lister, passed away last evening at his residence iv King street, at the age of 70 years, after an illness of several weeks duration. He arrived iv the early days of the settlement (in April IST I: and has resided here ever since. Previous to his coming to New Zealand he had served in the Royal Artillery, 12th Brigade, for twenty-one years aud was receiving a pension for his services. He leaves a grown up family to mourn their loss. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon, leaving his late residence at 2 o'clock.
