The alacrity with which tho ratepayers of the Borough have come forward to sign the petition to the Borough Council praying for the re-erection of a bridge at South street, may be acoepted as indicative of their willingness to assist in finding the required money. It can hardly be expected that £300 can be spared from the ordinary reyenue of the Borough for this purpose, aud as the bonk overdrait is already as large as tho law permits, there appears to be no other plan than that of raising a loan under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act. The time is opportune. The ratepayers fully recognise the necessity which already exists for the introduction of a drainage scheme, the lighting of the town by gas or electrioity, rebuilding the j»uuth street
bridge, and the erection of Municipal Buildings. We believe that if a poll wore taken at the present time the required majority would be secured. It must be understood that the ratepayers would have to be made familiar with the most minute details of the loan proposals, and be assured that they would not bo oyerburdened with excessive rates. The last contingency is not likely owing to the rapid increase of population spreading the burden over so wide a surface, and the profits which would be derived from the lighting whether by gas or electricity.
