horticultural society. SOUND FINANCIAL POSITION. The annual general meeting of the ’Clevedon Horticultural and Industrial Society was held in. the Clevedon public hall on Tuesday evening, Mr 1). M. Bryan presiding over a fair attendance. A very comprehensive report on the year’s work was given by the secretary, Mr A. Greenfield, who also presented the balance sheet which although only showing a small credit balance on the 1934 show, showed the society to have a bank balance of £39 10s 3d. Year’s Activities Reviewed. Extracts from the secretary’s review of the year’s works are as follows: — There were sufficient blooms at the show in November to moderately fill the hall and to give it a very striking effect. There was a decrease in the attendance which reflected in the tea-rooms resulting in less revenue than any previous year since the society commenced. Three silver cups and two certificates of merit were competed for. The Hosking and Hollinger cup for the most points in the rose section was won by Mrs D. M. Bryan who also exhibited the champion rose. The society’s cup for the most points in the cut flower section was won by Mrs F. B. Burgoyne. Miss D. Hyde was awarded a certificate of merit for a most outstanding exhibit in the sweet peas class. The Pascoe trophy for most points in the floral artistry section was awarded to Mrs E. M. Wilson. After a five years’ trial with a carnation and gladioli show and no progress made, the committee resolved not. to hold another until better support was accorded. We were unfortunate in not getting any rev-. enue from the daffodil and autumn shows which w'ere cancelled, the daffodil show through the death of Mrs McNicol on the eve of the show, and the autumn show through the long dry spell of summer weather. During the year the R.S.A. was approached with the -view; of obtaining assistance to maintain the soldiers’ monument, and a committee was set up to work ih conjunction with this society committee. The Manukau County County Council was also approached and asked to improve the road and paths round the monument which resulted in the paths and water channels being properly fixed up, and the appearance of the corner is much improved. Thanks are due to the ladies who helped to clean up the inside of the monument grounds. The sum 18s 9d was spent on plants and a donation of soil by Mr A. D. Bell \Vas placed in position by the returned soldiers. The society’s utensils have been kept in good order and repair but there should be more vases provided. Election of Officers.
