COUNTY WORKS.

PROGRESS BEING MADE. ENGINEER PRESENTS REPORT. The following report on works was presented to Wednesday’s meeting of the Franklin County Council by the engineer, Mr J. F. McArthur: — “Outfall drain, Papakura-Ti Ti main highway: The matter of clearing an outfall drain from the above named highway and adjacent to Litchfield’s was left for report from a previous meeting of the council. When inspected, it was found that an improvement could be made by clearing the drain for a distance of five or six chains, which would lower the water level at road and Mr Litchfield's property. Sufficient fall may not be obtainable to completely drain the low area at road, but a considerable improvement could be made. The work can be undertaken and completed in a few days with labour available.—Work to be undertaken.

Access Native Land. “Proposed access, Whatapaka native block: A letter was received at last meeting of your council from Para Mita Clark requesting that a road be taken through Lot 1 (Ellett's) to give access to Whatapaka Native block. When this matter was considered, it was thought that it might be possible to take a road through section 64E, starting from end of existing legal road at foreshore and joining up with road at section 64C. After inspection, however, it was found that this was not practicable. The grade obtainable would not be suitable and the length by this route would be greater than through lot 1 and also more costly.. The road if taken through lot 1 would be approximately 37 chains in length and would require fencing on one side only. To make this road passable for light traffic would cost approximately £IOO. This, together with fencing, would be, say, £l6O. In addition to this, there would be the cost of compensation for a little under four acres of land. The sketch plan shows the locality of proposed access road in relation to adjacent sections. — Left to chairman, the clerk and the engineer to deal with. “Access road, Pokeno: Mr J. Little made enquiries some time ago regarding the metalling of his access road. Before metalling, the road requires some formation, which Mr Little is prepared to carry out at his own expense. The length of road in question is 10 chains. The metalling of this would cost upwards of £36.—Referred to Gr. J. Dean and the engineer. “Stream diversion, Whakatiwai: When the site of proposed diversion was inspected ,it was found that the land was owned by Walter Tutapoua, supposed to be a resident of Tahuna.. I have failed to locate him there. The sketch plan shows the approximate position of proposed diversion, which would be about one chain in length. A few days with relief workers camped in the vicinity would do all the work required. The work is essential to prevent damage to the road during heavy flood periods.—When the owner’s consent is obtained, the work is to be undertaken

Repairs to Bridges. “Bridge repairs: During the past few months, repairs have been carried out to a number of brjdges, some having been raised and generally reconditioned. The following are the bridges dealt with and roads on which they are situatedT Four separate bridges, Awhitu-Waiuku main road; Drake’s bridge, Ararirnu-Paparimu road; two separate bridges, Miranda road; Whangarata overhead railway bridge, Tua-kau-Pokeno main highway: Slippery creek bridge, Great South Road main highway: two separate suspension bridges, Mangalawhiri Valley: Donnelly’s bridge, Donnelly’s road: Ballard’s bridge, Runciman-Ararimu road; Creamery bridge, Great South Road main highway: Gannon’s bridge. Run-ciman-Ararimu main road: Jericho bridge, Jericho road: Snelgar’s bridge. Drury-Waiuku main highway. The bridge situated on Dale’s road, Rama

Rama, is not in a fit state to carry heavy traffic and is submerged during flood periods. Sufficient timber is on the site to recondition and the bridge by two feet'. The work will be put in hand as soon as possible. “Flood damage: Considerable minor damage occurred, especially in the eastern sections of the county, during recent heavy rain metal surfaces of I roads being washed off, and bridge approaches damaged. Most of this, however, lias now been repaired. ! “Works generally: The usual maintenance work with county workmen and plant is being carried out throughout the county. Every effort is being made in connection with works generally to curtail expenditure as far as possible.” ! The report was aTTopted.
