“A HARDY ANNUAL.”

Sir, —The matter of kudos as to reduction in tire insurance premiums in Pukekohe seems to be a hardy annual in a certain quarter. My question in a previous letter as to who prepared the map required by the Underwriters to assist them in considering the application for a reduction has not been answered. Poaching on other people’s preserves is not a desirable occupation, and 1 know of only one local organisation that has shown some inclination to secure the honour. An—ltier question has been raised recently, namely, “that the Government should devise some system to ensure that efficient men are appointed to local bodies in administrative capacities.” If inefficient men are appointed it is probably.the fault of the local bodies inviting applications. There is ample recourse to enable a local body to ascertain whether an applicant is reasonably efficient or not. Another phase of the question is that pinpricking is galling to efficient men now in the employment of local bodies and who are perhaps not in a position to take up the cudgels in self defence. The old story of Jeshurun kicking after he has waxed fat may have a modern application. —I am, etc., JOHN ROUTLY. Pukekohe, August 25, 1933.
