DISTRICT NEWS.
PAERATA. A dance, under 'the auspices of the Paerata and Rect'efcition Club, was helfl on Thursday last, which pioved to be one of the most successful yet held in the district, The floor was in good order and the music, which was ably rendered by Mr and Mrs Harh'man, was of the highest order. During the interval for refreshments the president qf the club (Mr A. Ross) had several, pleasing duties to perform/, firstly in presenting to Mr and M?:s Harriman a beautiful afternoon tea set as a small recognition of the services which they have so generously given to the club. Mr Ross referred not sof much to the value of the present, bait to the spirit in whichj it was given, Mrs Hann'iman, on behalf of Mr Karri. man / (both of whom were quite over—takep by surprise) in a few well chosen wordsf, thanked the club for the present, and also said that it was qiiita a pleasure for them to come along and do what little they could, Mrs Haririman also referred to the many pleasant evenings they had spent at the club’s functions in the past.
The second item was the presentation to Miss Ellis of an 8-day clock as a mark of appreciation for the musical services rendered at the club’s mid-weekly dances for learners. Mr Ross refedred to the progress Miss Ellis had made in musical circles.
|Phe next matted to claim the president’s attention was the presenting cf the aggregate points prizes (donated by Mr and Mrs Barnett) in the recento euchre tournament. • After some very close scoring the winners proved to be Mrs Reid (Helvetia; Mr Ross, in a few well chosen wonds then • presented Mrs Reid with a beautiful! silver tea -pot and. Mr J. and Mr J. Sch'iaepfer, jun (Helvetia) wifh a lovely pocket wallet. After the applause had subsided following these presentations the company saing”" “Foil- they are jolly good fellows, ” and gave three rousing cheers for the recipients, * A hearty vote of thanks by acclamation was passed to M?r and Mrs Barrett for their generosity in donating the prizes. Dancing was then resumed and a most memorable and’ enjoyable evening was brought to a close at about 2 am.
