SECOND FILM FESTIVAL TO BEGIN IN DUNEDIN TO-MORROW
The* second film festival, organised by tlie Dunedin Film Institute, null open to-morrow for a season of a week. 'J lie principle of daily change of program mo will again be followed. The films to be screened * are ‘ The Southerner,’ ‘ The Reluctant Dragon,’ ‘ Woman in the Window,’ ‘ Pimpernel Smith,’ ‘ln Which We Serve,’ and i‘ Lifeboat.’ The Dunedin institute introduced the film festival for the first time in New Zealand last March, when a successful,' week of six outstanding “classic” films was screened. The principle of the repertory week is. now being adopted by the other institutes in the main New Zealand centres. The Dunedin institute was formed in August’last year. Within two months it became necessary, because Of.the limited size of the hall, to close the membership at 200. At the Beginning of this month the Dunedin Orphans’ Club granted the institute permission to use its new hall, and it became possible to reopen the membership. Within a * fortnight it has increased four-fold, bringing t-lie total to I.UOO members and making it three to four times larger than any other similar society in New Zealand. NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE. , The New Zealand Film Institute was formed in .January of this year. It is executive in function, and to it are affiliated the various film societies in New Zealand, which now total between 20 and 30. Dr A. R. Ellis, of ; Dunedin, was elected first Dominion president, and Mr Gordon Minims was elected chairman of the working committee. The office of patron has been accepted by Mr Justice Smith, Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, and the offices of vice-patrons have been accepted by Dr W. P. Gowland, professor emeritus of anatomy at . the Otago University Medical School, and Professor lan Gordon, of Victoria University College, who is Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand.
