RUNAWAY TRAM ENDS SPECTACULAR JOURNEY EMBEDDED IN FOOTPATH.—When it left the Anderson’s Bay terminus at 9.6 a.m. to-day a city-bound tram jumped the points on the hill halfway down Silverton street, and completely out of control it sped down the bitumen road across the tracks to come to a halt on the corner of Silverton and Somerville streets. These photographs, taken by the ‘Star,’ barely 15 minutes after the runaway, show how the tram ended its spectacular journey. Upper: The tram is seen where it came to rest after it had run 100yds down the bitumen road and jumped the tracks to plough through the grass plot. Lower left: Amidst rubble and splintered wood the tram lies across the road, outside shops in Silverton street. Lower right:- The front of the tram projects into the corner property. A workman is removing the twisted trolly pole. It was expected that, an attempt would be. made to move the vehicle this afternoon.
