FINES IMPOSED FOR BREACHES OF BUILDING REGULATIONS

(P.A.) GISBORNE, July 17. A fine of £25 was imposed by the magistrate, Mr E. L. Walton, on Percy William Harold Smith, a builder, for what counsel for the building controller described as a flagrant breach of the building laws. On a second charge Smith was fined £3. The first charge involved the addition of extra space to a new house, and the second case alterations to a garage without permits. Counsel for the defendant attributed the trouble to the fact that there was no building controller m the district who could sanction or veto a job when difficulties arose.
