“ Money .was given to the society for a specific purpose and no good can come froin accumulating it,” said the chairman, Mr JR. Fountain, at the monthly meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on Tuesday, when the financial aspect of the erection of new kennels was discussed. Mr R. D. Stewart estimated that the cost* of the upkeep of the kennels on the society’s site at Opoho, would be' £SOO, and when he' asked whether or not. the society could stand the expense, the secretary’ briefly summarised the’ financial position. -The property had cost the society £1,300 leaving £B,OOO held in investment®, the- secretary said. i Mr Fountain: The money was given for the purpose of looking after animals. What are we ever . going to do with £8,000? If we do not provide some service for the public we cannot expect public support., Mr A. de Beer: Our funds are like the Patriotic Fund—nobody can get anything out of them. Messrs Fountain, Stewart, and H. H. Henderson were appointed to a sub-committee to inspect the society’s property, and prepare a comprehensive report on the scheme for the erection of kennels and a caretaker’s house on the site.
