SEAMEN ADMIT THEFT OF CIGARETTES FROM SHIP'S CARGO
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 16. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., John Carmack, a seaman, aged ‘2O, and Albert Errington, a seaman, aged 32, members of the crew of the steamer Samlamu, were charged with stealing 27,000 cigarettes, valued at £IOO, the property of the Port Line. Detective Ritchie said that on Saturday morning, at the railway station, he saw the accused who answered the description of two men reported to have taken five suit cases from the left luggage office. When lie asked the accused whether he could examine the suit cases, the men dropped them and ran away. On opening them Tie found the cigarettes. Inquiries showed that a number of cigarettes had been pillaged from the steamer Samlamu. The two accused were subsequently interviewed, and admitted having taken the cigarettes from the hold, intending to sell them. Both the accused pleaded guilty, and were committed to,the Supreme Court for sentence.
