THIRTY STUDENTS TO BE TRAINED IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

About 30 students, the numbers of men and women to be about equal, will be admitted to the . National School of Education when it opens at the University of Otago this year, according to a report presented to the Council of the University yesterday afternoon. The Chancellor (the Very .Rev. D. C. Herron) presided. The lecturer appointed will be a man and the assistant lecturer a woman, it was decided. Both the positions will be advertised, for the man in New Zealand only, and for the woman in Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. , Student candidates should have either the school certificate or University entrance _ qualification at the time of application, but special consideration may be given to candidates over 21 who furnish evidence of special attainments. The minimum age at time ,of application will be 17. CHAMBER MUSIC RECITALS. Amended conditions regarding the gift of £I,OOO from Mrs Dora Fels to provide concerts in chamber music in memory of the late Mr Alfred Eels were referred to. the professor of music (Dr V. E. Galway). The donor requested that the capital and interest be used so as to provide approximately equal withdrawals during the next 50 years, and the exhaustion of the fund by that time. It was also proposed that students be admitted free to the concerts. OTHER BUSINESS. The renewal of the W. H. Travis grant for tuberculosis research at the Otago Medical School was reported by the registrar (Mr H. Chapman). The fund would provide finance for five years’ work, being disbursed in one vote for plant of £4,600 and annual grants each of £2,312 10s. An offer was accepted from the Dunedin Rotary'Club of £IOO to provide a hook prize of £6 annually in auditing in memory of the late Mr William Richmond Brown.
