DUNEDIN FRENCH CLUB CELEBRATES BASTILLE DAY

A meeting of the Dunedin French Club, which was attended by 170 members, was held last evening in the Tudor Hall, to celebrate the Fete Nationale, which commemorates the fall of the Bastille, and which 1 is observed by Frenchmen throughout the world on July 14. Mr A. Norman Haggitt, French Consular Agent for Dunedin, conveyed congratulations to. Madame Bellugue (president of Dunedin French Club), on being awarded the decoration of the Palmes Academiques by the French Government in. recognition of her services in promoting French culture in Dunedin.

Greetings were received fromM. Armand Gazel, the French Minister in New-Zealand, and among the guests welcomed by Madame Bellugue was the Mayor, Mr D. C. Cameron. A programme of French songs and presented by Students of the ersity of Otago, pupils of the Otago Girls’ High School, the Otago Bovs’ High School, and the King’s High School Miss M. C. Dillon, and Messrs Brian Drake. George Wilkinson, Burnard Wilkinson, andFarquhar Wilkinson. During the evening a collection was taken up in aid of the relief of distress in France. The French national flag was flown from the offices of the French Consular Agency yesterday.
