VARIED CRAFTSMANSHIP OF AUSTRALIAN WOMEN

When imports were restricted during tho war, Australian women learned to . make many things they had never attempted before. Some of the results of their craftsmanship were on display at the recent annual exhibition of the Society of Arts and Crafts of New South Wales. Entries this year included hand-beaten silver jewellery set with Australian black opals, and white opals and pearls from the Northern Territory; hand-made gloves and artificial flowers rivalling the French, and dolls and wooden toys, besides the more usual embroidery, knitting, hand-made lace and leather work. Large sections were also devoted. to weaving, pottery, and fabric printing and designing. PRESSURE COOKERS It will be of interest to many women to know that pressure cookers are soon to be made in New Zealand. The pot is heated. on the element and when the indicator reaches “ Cook ” (151 b i pressure) the element is turned low. Food cooked in this way is excellent; taste and vitamin value being well preserved. A stew, for instance, would cook in. about 15 minutes. The meat goes in for 10 minutes, add the vegetables for five, and there’s the stew. For. roasting and frying meats the meat is braised first in the open cooker, a small amount of water added, and then cooked according to instructions.
