Wool Duty and Imperial Preference Still Unsolved Problems

(Rec. 10.45 a.m.) ! GENEVA, July 14. “ A decision can and will be reached on the differences between the United States and the United Kingdom on the Empire trade preferential system,” said Sir Stafford Cripps at a Press conference to-day. He added that the talks on tariffs had reached the point where the, main problems stood out clearly. ■ “No one nation can expect to have things all its own way. All must make concessions,” Sir Stafford Cripps said. Sir Stafford denied that there was direct connection between the American demands on the preferential system ~ and the Australian demands on wool. ‘ The Times ’ correspondent says there is nothing to indicate substantial progress towards solving the wool deadlock. All the lesser, questions in dispute in the charter have now been disposed of, but the affect is to bring the major difficulties into greater prominence. It is common knowledge, says the correspondent, that wool duty is one of the difficulties, and Imperial preference another, while a third is the need to decide how far to allow the use of protective measures for economic development, and how to reconcile them with reduction of trade barriers.
