STEEP RISE IN RAILWAY FARES IN QUEENSLAND

(Rec. 1 p.m.) BRISBANE, July 15. Rises up to 100 per cent, have been made in suburban railway fares, although the Railway Department of Queensland had announced a general 10 per cent, rise in fares and freight rates. The increase came into operation yesterday. The promised-. 10 per cent, has ! been exceeded on ail near suburban fares because under the bylaw the minimum rise permitted on all fares under 2s is 2d. This sharp rise hits all those who do not travel on workers’ or weekly tickets. A report from Sydney indicates that an immediate rise in New South Wales is not expected.
