FOG FORCES PLANE TO LAND IN PADDOCK
(P.A.) NELSON, July 15. A privately-owned Avro Avion plan* on a flight from Wellington to Westport made a forced landing in a paddock at Murchison yesterday afternoon The machine was damaged, but neither of the two occupants, L. Gatehouse (pilot) or T. Re veil; of Wellington. was injured. The machine, whose registration lettering is ZK-ADQ, had almost reached Westport when the weather became thick and the. pilot decided to turn back with the intention of landing at Tophouse aerodrome As there were foggy conditions over the hills between Murchison and Tophouse, 26 miles away, and as the petrol supply was nearly exhausted the pilot decided against risking an attempt to reach Tophouse. After circling Murchison in clear weather he put the plane down at 3 o’clock in W. Hodgkinson’s paddock, close to the township. In landing, one wheel and part of the undercarriage were crumpled. The machine swerved round and tipped forward on to its nose, breaking the propeller.
