HOUSEWIVES FAVOUR SATURDAY OPENING OF FOOD SHOPS

Seventy-five per cent, of housewives recently interviewed by a sub-com-mittee of the Wellington Housewives' Association found that the 40-hour fiveday week was a definite hardship. The committee’s findings were given at a meeting yesterday at which unanimous agreement was reached on the point that it was the five-day week worked at one stretch and involving the long week-end to which women objected. Single working women _ and girls without household responsibiltiies were 100 per cent, for the 40-hour week, the investigations showed. A staggered five-day week, allowing for Wednesday closing and Saturday opening of food shops especially, was advocated.
