POSITION OF TENANTS AT CENTRAL BATTERY TRANSIT CAMP

, Five families' were housed at the Central Battery camp, and there might soon be eight, said Or J/H. liinton at a meeting of the St. Hilda Borough Council last night, when he pointed out that if they .paid no rates they were adding'to the burden placed on the other ratepayers. It was pointed out that the camp was outside the borough boundary, but Cr liinton maintained that the tenants used the borough amenities. ’ ' If rates .were payable to anyone, it should be to the Peninsula County Council, explained the town clerk (Mr •T. F. Trezi.se), as the camp was in that county. Ci Hint.on said he appreciated the remark of the mayor (Mr N. I). Anderson) that the camp .was only a transit housing one, and it was much better to house families there than allow the, accommodation to remain vacant. During .the discussion it was mentioned that the Army Department, which owned the camp, paid no rates and could not be sued for payment. The tenants paid for the water supplied to them through meters. The town Clerk reported that the council’s credit balance stood at £3.790, and would • probably increase. The financial position would be satisfactory by the end of the year, howevdr. The meeting was attended by the mayor, Mr Anderson, and Crs Hinton, T. D. B. Hoy, J. C. Cherry. 11. S. Brent, J. W Pearson, E. Longworth, D. A. Telfer, and P. -T. B. Tlendel.
