J-FORCE DRAFT ABOUT TO LEAVE FOR JAPAN
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 14. J-Force troops were in high spirits as they packed their sea kits and' ate their last meals in camp to-day, when the Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones, arrived at the Papakura military camp to bid them an official farewell. Tomorrow morning the 2,000 men who comprise the second relief draft of the force will embark on the troopship Dunera for Japan. “ I came specially from Wellington to extend to you from the Prime Minister, the Government, and the people their good wishes on the eve of your departure for Japan,” the Minister said. Referring to criticism of the conditions for the troops in Japan made by some of the draft which returned" recently, he stressed the need for certain restrictions in an enemyoccnpied country. There were, certain places where the troops could not go; and they would have to obey those rules and appreciate why they were carried out. Mr Jones mentioned the existence of disease, including cholera, in the bombed area* which provided danger if not controlled.
