SOUTHLAND TOURISTS HANDLE MUD TO DEFEAT CENTRAL SIDE

On a muddy ground, which confined play mostly to the forw’ards, the Southland Rugby Sub-unions team scored its first win of its Otago tour, when it defeated a combined Maniototo-Vin-cent-Eastern Districts fifteen 6-0, at Ranfurly. • : - * •, > The teams :

Southland Sub-unions.—D. Crosby, J. McDonald, A. Guttrey, I. Overton, A. Grey, M. Milne, iR. Heydon, G. Spittle, G Kennedy, L. H. Ogilvie, E. H. Brown, R. Stewart, A. Fisher, R. Whyte, and T. Walsh. Combined Team.—J. Hanrahan, Costello, D. J. Blakeley, Brent, J. C. Kearney, G Gunn, J. Wilson, Kemp, W. Wilson, Gray, R. Dobson, Lunn, A. Hunter, J. Nicolson, and Currie. The Southland .forwards packed a solid scrum and won most o| the rucks and line-outs. They dribbled effectively and- altogether they adapted themselves to the conditions to, greater advantage. The tourists’ superiority in the forwards resulted in the Combined backs being on the defensive most of the time. The home team’s rearguardwas disorganised in the second half when J. C. Kearney, the All Black five-eighth, and Hanrahan', at full-back,, had to leave the field.

Southland held a territorial advantage for the greater part of the game, and Brown and Spittle were outstanding in the pack. They were at the head of most rushes, and supported by Walsh and Fisher, they worried the Combined vanguard. Among the Combined forwards, Hunter was prominent for his rush stopping and tackling, Dobson Was at the peak of his form,, and Kemp and Currie ' worked hard in the tight. Kearney was given few opportunities on attack but his all-round play was particularly sound. The Southland ■ ondks handled surely, hut (Mine, at first five-eighth, hung on to the ball too long on'attack. Hanrahan proved •reliable at full-baclk once he settled down. The resnective half-backs. Hevdon and Wilson, were sound. Wilson shone on defence and He.vdon stood out for his cover defence and clean passing of the greasy, ball. Spittle and Overton scored, tries for Southland. Mr T. McEnight was the referee. SECONDARY SCHOOLS DRAW The ■ following is the secondary schools Rugby draw for Friday:— A Grade.—K.H.S. A v. 0.8.H.5. B, at Bathgate No. 1 (Mr McKenzie): K.H.S.
