This was conirary to the ruling given at the annual neeting of the New. Zealand Rugby Jnion by Mr S. S. Dean, when the )tago delegate, Mr D. C. Jolly moved n amendment to the existing Ranurly Shield rules'2 and 7, to provide or the appointment of an outside eferee' by the New Zealand Rugby Jnion to control all (Ranfurly i Shield notches.-, Mr. Dean submitted that the amendment was not necessary as the ules already provided-for a cballengng union to apply for an outside eferee for (Ranfurly Shield matches. )elegates accepted that ruling and left ;he meeting assured that in future all lanfurly Shield matches would be con,rolled by outside referees if requested, ’he Otago Rugby Union was comiletely at a loss to understand the rolte face of the Management Commitee of the New Zealand ißugby Union n the matter and asked for an exilanation of the Management Commit-, ee’s action in over-riding the decision iven at the’annual meeting. A request from the_ band of the First Jattalion of - the Southland' Regiment ;o iplay at the. half-time interval on ;he occasion of the return match between Otago and Southland at Dunedin n September was granted. A letter from the Auckland Rugby Union enclosing the itinerary for the Auckland team’s southern tour was revived. August 20 was set down for the match against Otago. As it was boo early to consider any variation in the programme the question of playing Otago on a Saturday instead of Wednesday in the event of Otago holding the shield could not be decided. Permission was granted to the Dunedin Club V fourth grade team to travel to Invercargill to play (Marist on August 2, The application of Mac-sndrew.-Intermediate School for permission to send two teams to Invercargill to' play Tweedsmuir Intermediate School on July 17 was approved.' • ' .
