CANTERBURY BEATEN BY OTAGO 62-42

Indoor Basketball:

Accurate shooting and superior speed on attack gave Otago a convincing win against Canterbury by 64 points to 42 in the men’s indoor representative basketball match played on Saturday night. Both on attack and defence the Otago captain, L. Williams, was outstanding. He was supported in solid defensive play by A. S. Mills. The Canterbury team was spasmodic in its play and Otago was quick to take advantage of any lapse m form on the part of the visitors. A fast pace was set .'from the first whistle and Otago scored within 30 seconds of the opening of play. The home side showed better ball control and at the end of the first quarter led 22-13. Otago continued to combine effectively and at the end of the second quarter the board read 41-25 in the Dark Blue team’s favour. There was a bad lapse in Canterbury’s goal shooting ‘ at this stage and at three-quarters time the ocore was 53-33 against Canterbury. Otago held the advantage and time sounded with the score:— Otago ... ... 62 Canterbury ... 42 J. Paterson and W. Williams each with eight goals and two penalties, were Otago’s highest scorers. For the visitors P, Thomson scored 18 points and R. Offer threw five goals. Messrs (R. 0. Johnson and L. D. Smith were the umpires. OTHER GAMES. Otago B had a good .win by 45 points to 24 against the Canterbury B team. D. Garner played a " brilliant game for the Dark Blues, and he made up for his lack of height by being very active on the court. He shot eight goals and one penalty, and W. Chapman had six goak to his credit. Agassiz scored eight points for Canterbury._ throwing four goals. Messrs L. V. Gain and H. MeCoy were the umpires. In a close and exciting match the Canterbury women’s team beat Otago by 22 points to 17. The teams were evenly matched but Canterbury moved round the court more .quickly. At half time the score was 12-11 in Canterbury’s favour. D.. Wilson was .the main scorer for Canterbury, with five goals, while E. Johnstone and V. Treweek threw two goals each for Otago. Mr D.
