GOODWILL PRICES FIXED FOR MILK DELIVERIES

Advice was received from the Central Milk Council Wellington, that approval had been granted to the recommendation of the board that the maximum prices of goodwill per gallon of millf sold retail should be fixed at £7 10s and milk sold wholesale at the rate of £4 a gallon. Steps would be taken to have the prices gazetted. The meeting was attended by Mr W. B. Taverner (chairman), Messrs J. F. McCartney. L. J. T. Ireland, A. F. Barr, H. Williamson, J. H. Hinton,. and L. Notice was received from Messrs Brass and Thompson, on behalf of the Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company Ltd. and the Otago Cooperative Milk Supply Company Ltd., that the milk-treating and milk-dis-tributing businesses of both companies had: been sold to the Crown, the sale taking effect as from midnight on May 31-June I.—Received APPLICATION FOR ZONE. Application for a wholesale zone of up to 700 gallons daily was made bv the Dairy Farmers’ Co-operative Milk Supply Company Ltd. The company was at present making deliveries of milk and cream to ice cream factories only.—The letter was referred to the Zoning Sub-committee. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The chief inspector (Mr G. E. Stokes) repoi'ted that during May 124 samples of milk were taken. All were submitted to the chemical test, and 24 failed to comply with the standard. Of five of the samples submitted to the phosphate test, one-failed to comply with the test for heat treatment. Four samples of bottled milk were found to be pasteurised, but were not labelled as such in accordance with the regulations. Twenty-two of the non-complying samples were taken at milk store where milk was treated, 'and represented milk from various farms. Seventy-seven sources of milk supply were checked and found satisfactory, with one exception, with which the Department of Agriculture was dealing. Vehicles and utensils were inspected for cleanliness and found satisfactory.

Sixty-five premises were inspected, and recommendation was made for the issue of licenses for seven milk shops, nine premises for the sale of bottled milk, four milk bars, and 11 milk deliveries. Three complaints concerning the quality of milk were investigated and check samples taken.—(Received.
