RECORD WEIGHTS OF GIFT PARCELS SENT FROM N.Z. IN MAY

WELLINGTON, June 27. “Over 1,000,0001 b weight of indigift food-fo-parcels were sent from New Zealand *to Great Britain during May this year, and this represents an increase of: over 100 per cent, on the weight of parcels sent m May, 1946,” stated the PostmasterGeneral, Mr F. Hackett, to-day; Gift food parcels forwarded inMay, 1947, numbered' 124,544 and weighed 1,122,3111 b, compared with 82,810 parcels weighing 542,5111 b despatched in May last year. " The weight of despatch for May, 1947,. was all the more • remarkable when compared with that of. the Christmas posting of October, 1946, which for the then record figure of 124,105 parcels, was only 849.9361 b, the Minister said. Parcels sent" in May, 1947, went by nine vessels sailing direct- for the United Kingdom. The fact that sailings were so frequent was of the utmost assistance to the Post Office in disposing of the record load.
