YOUTH WITH BAD LIST GIVEN ANOTHER CHANGE

Described by Chief-detective T. Y. Hall as an active thief with a shocking list, Colin Charles Kirkwood Dunsmuir (19), a labourer, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to-day to the attempted theft of postage stamps, valued at ss, the property of the estate of the late Mary Malthus. The Chief Defective said that Dunsmuir went to a private hotel in Dunedin at 4.30 p.m. on June 18, and entered the office. He was disturbed by a member of the staff, and was seen to shut hastily a drawer containing the stamps. He was allowed to leave, and the incident was later reported to the police, who interviewed him last night. Dunsmuir was liberated last month from prison. Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., admitted Dunsmuir to probation for one year, and commented that a sneak thief did not deserve much consideration. The Magistrate directed that Dunsmuir’s choice of employment and also his wages be supervised by the probation officer (Mr E. F. Mosley). OTHER CASES. John William Smith was fined £5 and costs for failing to give way to traffic approaching from his right, he was fined 10s and costs for not possessing a warrant of fitness for the vehicle, and he was convicted only for failing to disclose who was driving when an accident occurred. David Alexander Donaldson (Mr O. H. Stevens) was convicted only for failing to give way to traffic approaching from the. right, and lie was fined 10s and costs for not having a warrant of fitness for the vehicle.

(Ralph Augustus Maxwell (Mr W. J. Meade), James Calder Miller, and Raymond Maurice Brockbank were each fined £2 and costs for failing, to give wav to traffic approaching from their right.' Similarly charged, John Joseph Mayne was fined £1 10s and costs. For allowing chimneys to catch fire, Arthur Davie, John James Delahunty, Joseph Lavertv, Andrew Greig McHoull, Frederick Ozanne, and Margaret Elaine Sinclair were each fined 10s and costs (ss). Similarly charged, Harold Ernest Read was ordered to pay cost .sonly. Allan George Flawn was fined 5s and costs for riding an unlighted bicycle.
