AMERICA UNDERSELLING BRITAIN IN COTTON FABRICS

Lancashire reports state that British cotton manufacturing firms are experiencing increasing pressure from American competition in the British dominions and colonial markets which before the war bought the bulk of their requirements from Lancashire. Manchester merchants estimate that the rate of American shipments to these markets is now 50 per cent, over the pre-war level. Increasing American competition is also being encountered in the,Middle East, the Far East, and India. The Americans are delivering their goods at lower prices than' British manufacturers, and in India they are selling some cotton fabrics at as much as 2.s a yard less than comparable British cloth. American exporters are also reported to have captured the cotton piece goods and yarn trade with the Argentine which before the war hought most of its requirements from Brazil.
