NEW ZEALANDER BARRY HAS GREAT WIN IN DAVIS CUP TENNIS

(N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.) (Rec. 8.35 a.m.) LONDON, June 23. The young 19-year-old J. A.. Barry made a glorious debut at Wimbledon by beating the British Davis Cup player, G. L. Paish, by three sets to two. Barry began nervously, and I’aisli took the first set to love. In the second set the New Zealander began to get into his . stride, and at : one stage was leading by four games to two. Paish, however, went through to win at 6-4, and it seemed as though he had the match in his pocket. „ Each player won a service in the third set, and Paish was leading 6 to 5. It seemed all over when it - came to the match point, but Barry produced his cheerful grin and winning points, and then took the next two games, it still seemed that Paish would win when he began by taking the first two games of the next set, but again Barry drew level at 2 all. He broke through at 4-3 only for Paish to even up. Barry, howev.er, won Paish’s service, and on his own service won the set after six deuces. By 'now they had a full gallery in court No. 2, and there were ripples of excited chatter as they began the fifth and final set. Paish had shown signs of cramp in his right hand, which accounted for liis' beginning to double fault. Barry took the first two games. Paish drew level—4 all. Paish looked like leading by 5 to 4. He had a comfortable margin at 40-15. Again Barry levelled up, and after three deuces took the game. At 40-30 in the final set ne smashed , the ball sideways out of the court, and so went through to the second round. Though his service was slow, and lie was inclined to prod some of his double-handed strokes instead of hitting cleanly, Barry was never afraid to come up to the net. He never seemed down-hearted when the tide of the game was fully against him, and his win was fully deserved. It caused a wild sensation and a chorus of groans from the English onlookers, who were frankly disappointed to see one of their Davis Cup players go under to the youngest player in ttoe tournament.
