NOVICE BOXERS REVEAL GOOD FORM IN WELL-CONDUCTED BOUTS

For .over two and a-lialf hours last night ‘novice boxers in the Town Hall were in the limelight, and they turned on a first-class tournament for a large crowd. There was naturally some boxing that reflected inexperience, but there were many contests that showed the results of sound instruction, in any case the majority of the bouts were very willing, and the feature of the novice displays was the form shown with the left hand. Many of the contestants had only a hazy idea of ringcraft or of balance, and usually the bouts that began to the accompaniment of flashing gloves and fast, action ended prematurely, the pace being too strong, and some of the boxers leaving themselves wide open. A team of Middlemarch boxers, trained by G. A. Pepperwell, who himself gave an impressive display in an open contest, added to the competitive interest.

'there were 1G novice and two open bouts staged by the Otago Boxing Association, which controlled the fixture efficiently. The tournament is to be concluded on July 7, the remaining contests being preliminaries to the annual matches between Otago and Canterbury amateurs for the Waironga Shield. The referees were Messrs V. Parker and S. Paris, and the judges were Messrs R. M. Morris. O. E. Brown, A. E. Edwards, and S. Brown NOVICE CONTESTS Results FLY-WEIGHT. First Round.—A. Eerland (7st 131 b), who beat J. Pollock (7st 111 b), was more self-assured; A. Blackie (7st‘ lOrjlb) beat L. Dougal (7st 91b), and despite his disparity in height he carried the fight to his opponent; defeating W. Hynes (7st lib), I. East (7st 1241 b) provided a typical example of how a .straight left punch can win a contest, and in this one he used it throughout a bright bout, in which Hynes tired' to finish proceedings with a right uppercut. Final.—Borland defeated East by a technical knock-out in the third round. The slightly-built East found the exertion of two contests too much for him, and he did not have the stamina to finish BANTAM WEIGHT.

A fast left-hand punch, speedy footwork, and good physical condition gave Boss Pippett, of Melbourne, the decision over the New Zealand light heavy-weight champion, Doug Rollinson. in a professional boxing contest to-night. Bollinson, with a weight advantage of 41b and a good reputation as a heavy body punc'ljfr, relied upon counter-punching for most of the fight. Pippett led consistently and gained many points. He did not begin to slow flown until the ninth round, and at that stage he had so comfortable a lead on points that Rollinsou would have had to knock him out to win.
