LIGHTING IN ST. KILDA
CRITICISED IN COUNCIL
Lighting of the St. Kilda Borough was criticised at last night’s meeting of the council, attended *■ by the mayor, Mr N. D. Anderson, and Crs D. J. Simpson, T. D. B. Roy, R. S. Brent, J. W. Pearson, A. H. ■ Finnic, ■E. Longworth, J. H. Hinton, and P. J. B. Rendel.' “When the time is opportune, sodium lights should be installed in the borough,” said Cr Longworth, when discussing a petition from Mr J. P. Rees requesting that the lights in Bay View road should receive attention. Cr Rendel said he was convinced that increased candle-power in the poorly-lit places would solve the problem. Cr Simpson: That means right through the borough. It was decided to hold the matter over so that Cr Longworth could report to the next meeting. VANDALISM. The statement that further instances of vandalism had been perpetrated in private gardehs and other parts of the borough was made by Ci; Simpson. Cr Simpson said that the police had been asked to co-operate in dealing with the matter. He added that he knew the local constable had a wide area to cover, and that the police were understaffed, but He hoped more intensive patrols could be made in order that vandalism could be checked. “There seems to be a wave of vandalism throughout the city,” said the mayor. DRAINAGE PUMPING.
A report on the drainage system was submitted by Cr Finnie,‘who said that the present pumping station could not cope with the storm water owing to a defect in structure. The City Council, however, had nearly completed arrangements (for a loan for the construction of two. new pumping stations, which would serve the whole of the Flat. Until these were completed, he concluded, nothing could be done. GENERAL. The St. Kilda Municipal Band' forwarded: a proposed list, of. dates for its Sunday concerts, and requested the use of forms from'the Coronation Hall The dates were approved and the request granted.. When, hmving the adoption of the, traffic inspector s report, Cr Roy said ; that horsey were being ridden over the grass plots in the streets, leaving deep marks.—lt ..was decided. to ask the inspector to report to-the office any such cases which-he noticed. Accounts amounting to £215 10s 7d were passed for. payment, and receipts totalled £431 ■ 17s 3d. leaving a debit balance of £523 12s Id.
