UMBERTO PERSUADED TO AWAIT IT (Rec. 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, June 9. Umberto yesterday. tried to leave Italy without waiting for the official proclamation of a republic, says the ‘ Daily Express’s ’ Rome correspondent. Members of the Government prevented him from joining his wife in Portugal by persuading him that the step might lead to more trouble from Monarchist demonstrators.

The Supreme Court announced that the proclamation would be made at 6 p.m. to-morrow. Umberto is leaving within an hour of the reading of it. . The Communist leaders ordered their followers to stand by for counter demonstrations.
